Dusk in the Village Goes Green

May 30, 2008

This year residents of Sutherland and Golf Range Apartments were given an unusual request for the annual spring picnic. In their monthly newsletter residents were asked to BYOP or “Bring Your Own Plate.” In an effort to reduce waste and increase environmental awareness, the staff and residence associations of Sutherland and Golf Range Apartments asked residents to use reusable plates at the event. The UT Recycling program provided compost and recycling bins to further reduce waste creation.

Reusable grocery bags were given out to attendees along with flyers encouraging residents to use the reusable bags rather than push shopping carts from the local Kroger to the apartment complexes. Reusable grocery bags provides a legal, convenient, and environmentally friendly (the return of store carts requires the use of a vehicle) option for residents in hauling groceries.

In all 400 residents generated more than 30 pounds of food waste for composting and 27 pounds of plastic bottles, aluminum cans, and cardboard for recycling. Many thanks to the staff and residents of Sutherland and Golf Range Apartments for Making Orange Green!
