Going Green Information for Freshmen
June 04, 2008
Welcome to The University of Tennessee! Over the past five years The University of Tennessee, Knoxville campus has taken large strides to “green” campus operations. When you arrive on campus you will find many ways to Make Orange Green. These include:
Cardboard Recycling During Freshmen Move-In
Most students arrive on campus with plenty of cardboard boxes holding lamps, clocks, radios, and more. All of this cardboard adds up to an estimated 15 tons of material! Help Make Orange Green by recycling cardboard in designated locations outside residence halls. Look for signs posted within halls indicating recycling locations.
Residence Hall Recycling
Every residence hall room is furnished with both a trash can and a recycling basket. The recycling basket should be used for collecting all types of paper, plastic bottles, and aluminum cans within your room. When the basket fills simply empty it into the recycling bins (you will need to separate paper from plastic and aluminum) located in the centralized trash area on your floor. Students are responsible for empting contents of furnished trash cans and recycling baskets into the centralized waste area.

Make Orange Green Week
Make Orange Green week will kick off in early September. The week will feature environmentally-related lunch-and-learn events, speakers, films, and more. Updated information will be posted on http://environment.utk.edu

Light Bulb Exchange
Each fall students moving into campus residence halls have the opportunity to swap out inefficient incandescent light bulbs for energy efficient compact fluorescent bulbs (CFLs). CFLs use ¼ the amount of energy as a regular incandescent and last three times as long! The exchange will begin in early September. It will run for two evenings in each residence hall from 5pm to 7pm.

Student volunteers assist in the annual light bulb exchange. Last year's exchange resulted in the offset of more than 375,000 pounds of emissions and saved more than $13,000 in energy costs! To volunteer with the exchange email recycle@utk.edu
