Make Orange Green Environmental Leadership Award Winners

In an Earth Day ceremony held outside of McClung Tower, Faculty Senate President John Nolt awarded Environmental Leadership Awards to two students and a faculty member who demonstrate strong and continuing commitment to environmental stewardship at The University of Tennessee, Knoxville. Award winners were presented with a framed certificate and a “green” goody bag.

Freshman Jonathan Tatariw was recognized first with the Environmental Leadership Award for undergraduates. According to nominator Jay Price, Jon has been an outstanding student leader for recycling on campus, volunteering over 60 hours of his time to assist with recycling at home football games. Through his involvement with the United Residence Hall Council, Jon also encourages students to recycle and conserve water and energy in the residence halls.

The graduate winner of the Environmental Leadership Award is Joey Parent of the Department of Recreation and Leisure Studies. Since coming to UT in fall 2007, Joey has led the effort to increase recycling rates in RecSports facilities. In spring 2009, Joey helped raise awareness of water conservation by coordinating a reusable water bottle campaign and by hosting a presentation on man-made disruption of rivers. In sum, "Joey provides others with opportunities to learn about and connect with their environment, and is driven to make a difference."

Faculty member Dr. Joanne Logan was awarded the third and final Environmental Leadership Award for her commitment to advancing sustainability at UT Knoxville. According to nominator Eric C. Drumm, Dr. Logan exhibits outstanding service to the campus and community. This year, in addition to her regular teaching duties, Dr. Logan taught a Freshman Studies course in Living Green that involved field trips to a recycling plant, wastewater treatment plant, fair trade market, farmers’ market, and a community farm. Dr. Logan has also served as a faculty advisor for SPEAK and participated with planning efforts for the Focus the Nation Teach-in on climate change that was held on campus in February 2008.

Please thank Jon, Joey and Dr. Logan for helping to Make Orange Green!
