Smart Trips is a program administered by the City of Knoxville that promotes alternatives to driving alone. More than 90% of residents of East Tennessee commute to work by driving alone.
With increased driving expenses and driving-related environmental impact the Smart Trips program works to promote driving alternatives such as carpooling, taking transit, biking, and walking to work. In the event of an unexpected change in your schedule, you can take advantage of the Emergency Ride Home perk (faculty and staff only)!
Did you know that driving just 12 miles one way to work each day, you are probably spending more than $4,000 a year in commuting expenses? Save money and reduce your environmental impact by enrolling in Smart Trips . Along with savings at the pump you’ll also be able to enter your commutes in your online Commute Log to earn great rewards.
Alternatives to Driving Alone to Campus
If you are taking transit, biking, carpooling, or walking to work sign up to participate in the Smart Trips program (available to faculty and staff only)!!
Take the bus, Gus!
Knoxville Area Transit (KAT) bus passes are available to faculty, staff, and students at discounted rates.
• Freshman: All freshmen receive a FREE bus pass for all city routes!! The pass is mailed to a student’s home address before the beginning of the fall semester.
• UT Faculty, Staff, and Students: All UT faculty, staff, and students can purchase a UT Transit Pass for $35/semester ($20/summer semester). Please note that you must show your UT ID to purchase pass and show your UT ID along with the pass to ride)

Biking to Campus
The City of Knoxville has an extensive (and expanding) greenway system connecting campus to the community. The natural corridors provide a peaceful and protected path for biking to campus. For maps and additional information click HERE
The Knoxville Regional Transportation Planning Organization (TPO) works to coordinate regional transportation planning. Check out their local biking information and list of bike routes around the city.
Carpooling and Vanpooling
Smart Trips provides carpooling tips and a database to find folks located in your neighborhood interested in carpooling. All you need to do is sign up to participate in the Smart Trips program!
The UT Center for Transportation Research facilitates the Tennessee Van Employee Vanpool Lease Program. The Employee Vanpool Lease Program provides insurance, maintenance, and fleet management assistance to groups wishing to commute to campus via vanpool.
Transportation on Campus: The T
Ride the T on campus! The T-Access offers transportation to and from the main campus, ag campus, and Fort Sanders neighborhood weekdays from 7:00 AM until 6:00 PM. The T-Link provides transportation to the same areas nightly 6:00 PM until 7:00 AM.
