Spring Cleaning Success!
May 29, 2008
Students moving out of campus residence halls donated almost 6 tons of clothes and household items to Goodwill and more than 500 pounds of food to Second Harvest! This material, potentially destined for the landfill, will now go to help others in need. Donated items included ironing boards, clothing with tags still attached, school supplies, and many, many packages of Raman Noodles.
Jay Price, Environmental Coordinator and organize of the event is “amazed at the amount of clothing, furniture, and appliances students throw away as they move out of the residence halls. “ The amount seems to increase each year. Fortunately, Jay notes, “it’s wonderful that so many students are willing to donate items to a good cause. It’s all part of Making Orange Green."
Collection bins for clothing, household items, electronics, and non-perishable food are placed each spring in the lobby of all residence halls on the last Friday of class. The bins remain through exams and are removed the Monday after graduation. The Spring Cleaning program, now in its fourth year, has collected more than 47 tons of material for reuse and recycling.
